Searching for Motives… and a response

23 guns were found in Stephen Paddock’s Mandalay Bay Resort hotel room, where police say he fired bullets into a crowd of more than 20,000 gathered to watch the final night of a country music festival in Las Vegas. Another 19 weapons –  plus several explosives  — were reportedly found during a search of his home.  At least Fifty-nine people have been confirmed to have been killed, and more than 500 injured in what quickly became the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Investigators are now searching for motives.

The Hill also reports that Democrats, joined by former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.), “hastily scrapped plans to hold a Monday press conference aimed at pressuring the Trump administration for a more aggressive response to help storm victims in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Instead, they’ve scheduled a briefing to push for tougher gun laws such as enhanced background checks designed to keep firearms from the hands of potentially violent people.”

A vote on gun legislation is scheduled for as early as this week for the House.

You can help victims of the shooting by donating to the GoFundMe set up by local Las Vegas officials.

Chilling numbers

Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight provides these numbers (via Fortune):

273

“Based on the definition that a mass shooting involves four or more people shot, the shooting in Las Vegas is the 273rd of the year. Only 275 days have gone by in 2017 so far.”

For the second straight year, the application has opened in October, four months earlier than the previous date of January 1. You must fill out a FAFSA to get any of the money that is handed out in the form of grants, loans, and work-study awards.
